About Me

25 Things About Me:

  • Name? Tolu.
  • Age? 32.
  • Height? 5’2”
  • Zodiac sign? Gemini.
  • Birth order? First-born.
  • Religion? none.
  • Profession? I’m a licensed (but currently, non-practicing) attorney, currently in grad school working on my phD.  My research focuses primarily on how groups and individuals in urban areas whose identities are located at multiple sites of oppression (i.e., race, gender, and class) navigate the educational system/process in the United States.  My interests include:  race, class, gender, sex, sexuality, reproduction, law, and culture.  In addition to working as an attorney (in the past) in both the private and public sectors, I’ve also worked as a high school math (Algebra) teacher and a make-up artist.
  • Long term goal? To open an urban boarding school for girls and young women of color.
  • Hobbies? Watching movies.  (I’m an admitted movie snob).
  • Favorite food? twizzlers, tacos,  girl scout cookies (thin mints!), red bull, steak, maple bacon
  • Favorite TV show? Too many to list, but what instantly come to mind are (currently on the air and defunct): Dexter, The Office, The Wire, Girlfriends, Oz, Sex & the City, Will & Grace, Felicity, Dharma & Greg, Soul Food, the Golden Girls, the Bernie Mac Show, Everybody Hates Chris, X-Men (the animated series), Family Feud.  Favorite reality television program? None. I’d prefer to eat glass and drink gasoline than watch reality tv.  Sorry.
  • Favorite movie? Again, too many to list but my favorite genres are:  documentaries, biopics, dramas, and comedies.  Sub-genres:  fight, heist, vendetta, espionage, and romance movies are my favorites.
  • Blackberry vs. iPhone? Blackberry
  • Mac vs. PC? Mac
  • Fashion staple? I never leave home without fuchsia lipstick and a padded bra (sometimes two padded bras; yes, at the same time #shut-up #dontjudgeme).
  • Fragrance? (Men’s deodorant smells better than women’s deodorant, if you ask me) I use Old Spice Pure Sport anti-perspirant everyday.  Perfume: Hanae Mori, Stella in Two (by Stella McCartney), Mademoiselle (by Chanel), Rosewood (by Banana Republic), Silver Rain (by La Prairie), and Vanilla Blackberry (by Lavanilla Laboratories).
  • Favorite holiday? Halloween (if you consider that a holiday).
  • Favorite season? Fall, aka “V-neck sweater season.”
  • Favorite sports team? None; could care less about sports.
  • Favorite alcoholic beverage? Hard to say, I’m an über lightweight.  Don’t be surprised if I’m speaking in tongues after only half a mojito — but, definitely:  mojito.
  • Tattoos? Four (and counting).
  • Relationships?
    • Siblings = 3
    • Children = 0
    • Marriages = 0
    • Proposals = 2
    • Ex-boyfriends = as far as i’m concerned, once it’s over, it never happened
    • True loves = somewhere between zero and one, still doing the math on that one
    • Pets = 2 (Dexter, a chihuahua and Italian greyhound mix; and Broadway, a chihuahua and yorkie mix)
  • If knew then what I know now, I would’ve…? Saved more money; hung in there a little bit longer; said “yes”;  turned down more job offers than i accepted; told more lies; doubted myself less; eaten more bacon…
  • Random: I still have all my wisdom teeth, my big toe is longer than my second toe, and people who utter the word “satan” in casual conversation make me nervous.
  • By now, every woman should have her priorities in order.  In order of importance:
    • survival & well-being:  my physical/mental health and safety;
    • values:  my integrity/morals/autonomy/sound judgment/decision-making skills;
    • purpose & self-fulfillment:  my personal goals and aspirations;
    • relationships:  my support system (family, friends, significant other);
    • bacon
  • Favorite Quote? I have several but this one has become so deeply ingrained, it’s become my personal philosophy:  “We hold the authority over the positive and negative in our lives.  Only give permission to the positive.” –  by somebody’s mama on facebook, I forget who  **note:  this is not to be confused with the concept of “the power of attraction” or “positive thinking.” I don’t endorse that philosophy at all.**
